Weddings across Devon, from venues and locations to how the day actually feels

Every time I drive into a new part of Devon for a wedding at a new venue, I still get that little rush. The county keeps surprising me. One day it’s wild Dartmoor with wind whipping across the tors, the next it’s a sheltered South Hams valley where everything feels chilled and special, the day after that it’s North Devon coast with waves crashing and hair flying everywhere and then it’s a classy countryside manor house. No two places feel the same, and no two weddings do either.

I’m Alex, a Devon wedding photographer covering weddings all across the county, from Axminster to Dartmoor, Salcombe to Ilfracombe and everywhere else in and around our stunning part of the world. Based in Exeter, I’ve spent 15+ years photographing weddings across Devon, so I know how these days actually flow and where to go, from the obvious spots to the ones most people miss. I don’t stage things, I don’t pull people away for hours of posed shots, and I don’t turn your day into a production. I just turn up, blend in, stay well into the party (and sometimes longer), and capture what actually happens, the real laughs, the quiet looks, the moments nobody planned.

What Devon Weddings Really Feel Like

As someone who has lived in Devon all their life and has been shooting weddings here for over 15 years, it’s easy to take it for granted. But it’s when I attend weddings and especially those where couples and guests have travelled to Devon, I really appreciate what a stunning county it is. Weddings here always give a sense of being somewhere special, it can feel like a holiday, especially on the North Devon coast, but there is an air of calm even during the liveliest of parties. When the weather is good, we tend to have some of the most stunning countryside and surroundings to explore, most of the venues on the list below have exactly that. With so much history, features such as cliffs, open moorland, tucked-away valleys and venues that feel completely different from each other and an overall laid-back vibe, weddings in Devon have a unique feel, one that makes it easy to fully celebrate everything that is amazing about weddings. Highlights for me:

• Guests spilling out into the outdoor spaces enjoying the scenery in the golden light

• Kids playing garden games while the “grown-ups” celebrate and party together

• Taking couples off to some really special spots for a few quiet portraits away from the madness

• Late-night groups around fire pits or just standing talking under the stars

This is why I love working here. Couples that get married in Devon tend to soak it all in and are relaxed from the start. They want their day to feel like them, not something they’ve seen online.

How I Work on Devon Wedding Days

I don’t line people up or manufacture moments. I watch, I move with the flow, and I anticipate what’s coming.

That means:

• Catching reactions instead of posing for them

Photographing the atmosphere and the personalities instead of setting it up and asking people to perform

• Capturing the bits that actually belong to you and your people

After all these years you start to feel the rhythm of the day well before it happens. You know when the energy is about to spill outside, when the dancefloor is going to ignite, when a couple might sneak off for a quiet minute. You know where the light will hit the orchard or the cliffs at golden hour, and when to stay back so the moment stays real.

Different Parts of Devon (and How They Change the Day)

Coastal weddings (North & South Devon)

This is where the real holiday feels are. The weather can change in minutes, one minute sunshine, next minute wind and spray. The key thing is people lean into it, no matter the weather it still feels special. With the ever-changing light and conditions, there’s always something interesting happening visually

Countryside & barn venues

This is classic Devon. Barn and countryside venues across the county tend to give loads of space, that indoor-outdoor flow, and a natural shift into a more relaxed, almost festival-like atmosphere as the day goes on. Guests aren’t restricted to one place, they wander, sit by fire pits, play games and talk in little groups. That creates hundreds of little moments happening at once.

Manor Houses & Estates

These days can feel more structured and that will suit some, grand arrivals and formal spaces, but once the formalities finish, they open up like anywhere else. You get elegance early and a much more relaxed feel later on.

What Couples Actually Care About (and What Really Matters)

Most people start with timelines, structure and ideas of how things should go. By the time the day arrives, what matters is much simpler:

• People being present and able to be themselves

• Plenty of space to relax and breathe without days becoming over manufactured

• Not feeling rushed or pulled around

• Being able to enjoy their friends and family properly

That’s where the best photos come from. Not from perfect planning, but from everything that happens around it.

A few things I always get excited about at Devon Weddings

There are moments that come up again and again:

• Drinks receptions where people properly connect, lazy afternoons in the sunshine with good music allowing for amazing, natural photographs of people letting go.

• Golden hour across fields, coast or open space, I have seen some of the best sunsets in my life in Devon

• Late evening when things get messy in the best way, things may sometimes start off formal but I love the shift to the all-out fun on the dancefloor

• The opportunity for epic trips to the beach, on a Tor or a stroll through a corn field

What It’s Like Having Me There

I keep things simple. I’m not dragging you away constantly and I’m not turning the day into a production. Most of the time I’m just there, blending in and letting things happen.

When we do step away for a few photos it’s quick, relaxed and doesn’t feel like a shoot. Then you’re straight back to your people.

Devon Wedding Tips from 15+ Years Shooting Here

• Spring bluebells on Dartmoor, summer coastal light, autumn orchard colours, each season brings something different

• The weather can change quickly, so having a flexible plan always helps but not letting it get in the way is key, just roll with it

• Outdoor ceremonies work brilliantly when the flow between spaces is right

• Understanding when golden hour is on your wedding day should be a part of your timeline

• Where possible, I also capture aerial shots of the venue and landscape (subject to conditions and permissions) to really show off where it all happened

Devon Wedding Photographer FAQs

How much does a Devon wedding photographer cost?

Most couples invest around £1900 for full-day coverage. I keep things simple with one clear offering so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Do you travel across Devon?

Yes, I cover the whole of Devon, including Exeter, Dartmoor, North Devon and the South Hams.

Do we need to pose for photos?

No. Everything is captured naturally. I’ll guide you briefly if needed, but nothing feels staged or forced.

Farm, DIY and marquee weddings in Devon

Not every wedding in Devon happens at a venue.

Some of the best days I’ve photographed have been in fields, on family land, or built from scratch with a marquee and a lot of help from the people around you.

I photograph a lot of farm weddings across Devon, especially young farmer weddings, and they have a very different feel to traditional venues. Things don’t run on a tight schedule. People get involved. The day builds naturally, and the energy is usually on another level.

You’ll often have:

  • Family land used for the reception

  • Tractors, trailers, or something completely personal for transport

  • Friends and neighbours helping pull everything together

  • A marquee that becomes the centre of the whole day

It’s less about structure and more about people.

From a photography point of view, that works perfectly. There’s more movement, more interaction, and more of those moments that just happen without needing to be set up.
